Install and play the game in 5 steps
New to the game? Don't worry, just follow these steps and you're up and running in no time! Read on.
1. Read this first!
2. Install Return to Castle Wolfenstein.
3. Make 2 version of the game.
4. Update the game.
5. Configure the game.
1. Read this first!
The game exists in 2 parts.
- SinglePlayer. Where you play by your self and have to complete 7 missions as agent Blaskowitz.
- MultiPlayer. Where you play online on special multiplayer maps against other human opponents.
To complicate things, the multiplayer game is also split into 2 versions. Namely 1.0 and 1.4.
1.0 is the original game after you have installed the cd.
1.4 is simply an upgrade to 1.0 with built in anti cheat software.
The problem is that you can't play both at the same time, these two are not compatible.
With 1.0 you can only play on 1.0 servers and with 1.4 you can only play on 1.4 servers.
But don't worry. We will explain to you how to play both!
Roughly the differences between these two are:
1.0:
- No built in anti-cheat, so more hackers and abusers.
- Most servers are cracked (no valid cd key required).
- Higher number of beginners.
1.4:
- Anti cheat software.
- Valid cd key required (few servers are cracked).
- Better for competition (OSP mod).
- More maps and less bugs.
What to play is up to you (we are going to be neutral in this).
To be complete in this tutorial, we will install both versions so you can play both.
2. Install Return to Castle Wolfenstein.
First you need a copy of the game. If you don't have one you can probably still get it at an online store like steam or at some other store.
Alternatively you can download the RTCW10mp. But this is without singleplayer and without a valid cd key!
If you don't have or want to buy a key, you can try this online key-generator. It's free, so don't complain if it won't work.
If you have a valid cd key. NEVER give this to someone else and harbour it like a treasure. :)
a. Installing the 1.0 cd
If you have the original 1.0 cd. Installing the game is pretty easy. Just like other programs you press next, next ...
Only skip registration, that doesn't work anymore.
The game is installed into: C:\Program Files\Return to Castle Wolfenstein
b. Installing other cd versions
If you have an other cd version, like Game of the Year, Special or Extended edtition. Installing the game is pretty easy. Just like other programs you press next, next ... Only skip registration, that doesn't work anymore.
The game is installed into: C:\Program Files\Return to Castle Wolfenstein
Depending on the version you have installed, you can also install the RTCW10mp to play 1.0. and then skip to step 4. You probably won't have to install all the updates. Some updates are included in the cd.
c. Installing RTCW10mp download
If you have downloaded the game from the link above. Installing the game is pretty simple. Just like other programs you press next, next ...
If you already have 1.4 installed, you can simply install this next to it and it won't affect your current game.
Also run the RTCW_retail.reg to register the game as retail. It will make it possible to install updates.
The game is installed into: C:\Program Files\RTCW10mp
Don't start the game just yet.
3. Make 2 versions of the game.
Next we are going to copy the current 1.0 game to 1.4, to make both versions of this game.
We are assuming you installed the RTCW10mp version (but the same here applies here for the 1.0 cd install).
- Open your C:\Program Files\ folder.
- Select RTCW10mp (or Return to Castle Wolfenstein if you installed the cd).
![]()
- Copy and Paste it (press Ctrl-C and then Ctrl-V).
- The result is 'copy of RTCW10mp'. Select that folder.
- Rename the 'copy of RTCW10mp' folder to 'RTCW14mp' (pressing F2).
![]()
- Open your new 'RTCW14mp' folder.
- Select 'WolfMP.exe'.
- Make a shortcut of WolfMP.exe to your desktop (send to Desktop, create shortcut).
![]()
- Rename your new shortcut to 'RTCW14mp'.
![]()
The above instructions are made for Windows XP. For other versions the principal should be the same.
Congratulations, you made an extra copy of the game.
4. Update the game.
Next we are going to update this new copy we made to 1.4. The old RTCW10mp will stay the same, so you can still play 1.0.
First you need to download this 1.4 update package. Which contains:
- 1.4 Patch Full
- Goty mappack
- 1.41 Patch
- PB Updater
Unzip the 1.4 package to a new folder of your choice. Then install them all:
1.4 Patch
Install the wolf_update_1_4.exe.
Make sure you install it in the correct folder!

I'm not going to explain the other screenies here. It's a simple matter of next, next . . .
GOTY Map Pack
Install the goty_mappack.exe. This will add these extra official maps:
- mp_trenchtoast
- mp_ice
- mp_keep
- mp_chateau
- mp_tram
- mp_dam
- mp_rocket
Again, make sure you install it into 'C:\Program Files\RTCW14mp' and nothing else!
1.41 Patch
Install the wolf_update_1_41.exe. This will update your game to the latest version.
Again, make sure you install it into 'C:\Program Files\RTCW14mp' and nothing else!
Punkbuster Update
Finally, we need to update the punkbuster system. This is the anti-cheat system. Without an updated punkbuster, servers will kick you.
Run pbsetup.exe.
- Add a game.
- Select Return to Castle Wolfenstein.
- Select the correct Game Path: 'C:\Program Files\RTCW14mp\'.
- Check for updates.
Mods
One more thing. Since many server use special mods, it's a good idea to have them installed right away.
Download this 1.4 mod pack. Unzip these directly into your RTCW folder.
It contains: fritzbot, ktbani2008, omnibot, osp, shrubmod soundpack, wolf statanalyser and wolftv.
Ok, fantastic. Now you have both 1.0 and 1.4 installed and you can play both games!
To start to play on 1.4, you might want to enable punkbuster in the multiplayer screen. Almost all servers require this.
![]()
It's also a good idea to change your name. Servers don't like you playing with the default WolfPlayer name either.
![]()
There's lots more. But for now you can try to play some wolfie!
5. Configure the game.
If by now you played some wolfie with the default settings, you may have noticed things are a bit dark and you die very easily.
We could off course guide you through the whole menu, and explain everything to you. But we don't have time for that.
Instead I will give you a simple but basic configuration that will give you a chance of survival. Hey, you might even kill somebody now!
In your 'main' folder, there is a file called autoexec.cfg. Edit that file with for instance notepad.
There should be one line in it "set devdll 1". Leave it, it has to be there!
Add the following to this file so it looks like this:
set devdll 1 seta name MyOwnName seta sensitivity "2.5" seta cg_drawCrosshair "5" seta cg_crosshairSize "48" seta com_hunkMegs "384" seta com_zoneMegs "32" seta com_maxfps "76" seta rate "25000" seta cl_maxpackets "76" seta cl_allowDownload "1" seta m_pitch "0.016" seta r_mode "6" seta r_dynamiclight "0" seta r_gamma "2.0" seta r_ignoreFastPath "0" seta r_lodbias "2" seta r_mapoverbrightbits "3" seta r_picmip "0" seta r_roundImagesDown "5" seta cg_bobpitch "0" seta cg_bobroll "0" seta cg_bobup "0" seta cg_bloodTime "60" seta cg_brassTime "0" seta cg_hudAlpha "0.8" seta cg_marktime "10000" seta cg_popupLimboMenu "0" seta cg_shadows "0" seta cg_wolfparticles "0"
A few remarks about this config.
- On line 2, put in your own name tag. Try to choose something cool, something that is you.
- On line 3, set your mouse sensitivity. All mouses are different, so feel free to experiment with this.
- If your system and connection is up to it, use com_maxfps 125 and cl_maxpackets 100.
- On 1.0 with ATI graphics cards also add: seta r_primitives "2". Or graphics will be very slow.
This is it for now. Play and have fun with this!
